What You Need to Know about Overdraft Practices and Fees

An overdraft occurs when you do not have enough money in your account to cover a transaction, but we pay it anyway. We can cover your overdrafts in the following way:

1) We have a discretionary OverdraftHonor Privilege Service Policy that comes with your account, effective 30 days after opening, providing the account is in good standing.

What are the OverdraftHonor practices that may come with my account?

Sutton Bank will generally pay checks and permit transactions to be paid up to the established limit per account for NSF items, on checking accounts in good standing. Good standing may include any or all of the following criteria:

  • The account has been open at least 30 days.
  • The account has regular deposits consistent with past practices.
  • The account holder is not in default (30 days delinquent or more) on any loan obligation to Sutton Bank.
  • There are no current legal or administrative actions or levies.

Sutton Bank is not obligated to pay any item presented for payment if the account does not contain sufficient collected (available) funds. Any discretionary service payment of any NSF item(s) does not obligate us to pay any additional NSF item(s) or to provide prior written notice of our decision to refuse to pay any additional NSF item(s).

Once your account has been open for at least 30 days and is in good standing, we DO authorize and pay overdrafts on the following types of transactions up to the established overdraft limit:

  • Checks and other transactions made using your checking account, including ACH payments
  • Automatic bill payments

As required by federal regulation, we will not authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions unless you ask us to (see below):

  • ATM transactions
  • Everyday debit card transactions

We pay overdrafts at our discretion, which means we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction.

If we do not authorize and pay an overdraft, your transaction will be declined.

What fees will I be charged if Sutton Bank pays my overdraft?

Under our OverdraftHonor Policy:

  • We will charge you a fee of $30.00 each time we pay an overdraft. (Fee amount is subject to change).
  • Also, if your account is overdrawn for 5 or more consecutive business days, we will charge an additional $5 per day.
